This trail is perfect if you want to do a loop in the Porcupine Mountains and see as much of the park as you can in that time. The Porcupine Mountains Traverse is a ~26mi, gnarly, technical, loop which crosses most of the tallest peaks in the Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park, combining several of the park’s trails. Cross Trail heads south from the posted junction with the Lake Superior Trail on the west bank of the Big Carp River and immediately passes the Big Carp Four Bunk Cabin.

Minnesota to Jay Cooke State Park near Duluth, I drove to Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park and parked at the backpackers' parking area near the Presque Isle River. Even if I don't get the FKT, spending multiple hours exploring the park sounds really cool so I'm pretty stoked to go and give it a whirl sometime this weekend or early next week. The trail offers views of Lake Superior, passes through terrain of the rolling hills of the state park and has easy access to the White Birch warming shelter.
