Carrol Naish) announcing that the United States Marine Corps is seeking volunteers for a hazardous mission and special unit. Not completely cardboard characters, but not surprisingly engaging either. Early in the film there's a brief montage of various soldiers saying why they've joined…I'd also recommend it because it's well made. Have I seen them all? Dec 20, 1943 wide. is clearly a wartime propaganda film, so I presume that it was not made with much high art in mind.Part War Propaganda film, part action-packed battle spectacle and part, I dunno, comedy (? But nonetheless it’s the best 40’s/50’s World War 2 film I’ve seen so far.I think we need to better recognize the past treatment of Japanese people in America, such as the internment camps and their representation in propaganda war films such as Standard low budget war picture of the time. I didn't know the Marine Raiders went to Makin Atoll on a submarine so that was cool to see, and the film did effectively show how claustrophobic and uneasy it must be on an overcrowded sub. You have an honest-to-goodness murderer, a couple of bickering step brothers who both love the same woman, a violent preacher, a hard-nosed boxer named "Pig Iron" and a Hillbilly who works out his feelings of anxiety by closing his eyes and counting all four of his hogs back home -- in other words, this movie has it all.Keeping in mind that this movie was meant not only to entertain, but also to inspire young…A who's who of character actors star along side Randolph Scott and up-and-comers Robert Mitchum & Rod Cameron, in this loose adaptation and Hollywood-ized account of the raid on Makin Island. It accomplished what it set out to do.Normally I'm a sucker for old school WWII action movies but this one just didn't keep me entertained. The action which takes a while to get to is fun in that old war movie kind of way.
