Salonako is 13 Kilometers south of Afulu. While you won’t have your feet on the ground for long, expect to trek through a bit of coral on the way outside. Bawa is never flat and never crowded. There are plenty of beach breaks for beginners here. Always a bit of a journey, you’re likely to score empty line-ups and fun clean surf at Secret. This is for experienced surfers only! In places like Afulu and Hinakos you could even have a wave all to yourself in the middle of high season. This is the break where the first world-class wave was ever surfed in Sumatra (1975, by Australian surfers). The waves here are rarely crowded and surfers have been known to have waves to themselves even during swell season. Adventurous surfers can hire boats or motorbikes to explore those areas. Known as the undisputed best left-hander on Nias, Afulu is named from a nearby town and surrounded by countless un-named beach breaks. For most of these waves the conditions have to be just right so talk to your guesthouse or the local surfers in Sorake about this. If you have booked a surfing package, a trip or two to one of the ‘secret’ waves may be included.
